Tragic Drone Strike Targets Kindergarten in Sudan

A devastating drone strike in Kalogi, located in South Kordofan, Sudan, has reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 50 individuals, including 33 children, as confirmed by local reports.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary faction engaged in conflict with the Sudanese army, has been accused of orchestrating this attack, as stated by a medical organization and military representatives.

No immediate response has been issued by the RSF regarding these allegations.

In a reciprocal accusation, the RSF claimed that the army launched a drone strike on a market in Darfur on Friday, targeting a fuel depot at the Adre border crossing with Chad.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in turmoil following a power struggle between the RSF and the military, who were allies prior to this conflict.

Independent verification of these reports has not been possible.

The army-aligned foreign ministry reported that the kindergarten was struck twice by missiles delivered via drones.

Additionally, civilians and medical personnel who rushed to assist were reportedly targeted in the follow-up attacks.

“Killing children in their school is a horrific violation of children’s rights,” stated a spokesperson for UNICEF, responding to the tragic incident.

Sheldon Yett emphasized, “Children should never pay the price of conflict,” urging all factions to cease hostilities immediately.

The humanitarian agency also called for unrestricted access to aid for those in dire need.

The RSF, on the other hand, accused the army of attacking the Adre crossing due to its significance for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and commercial goods.

According to the Sudan War Monitor, an organization tracking the ongoing conflict, the market attack resulted in civilian casualties and extensive damage.

At the moment, the military has not provided any comments regarding the claims from Darfur.

The region, situated between Khartoum and Darfur, encompasses North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and West Kordofan, and has emerged as a battleground in the ongoing civil war.

The fighting in the Kordofan regions, which are home to nearly eight million people, has escalated as the military intensifies its operations towards Darfur.
