Santa’s Pay Stagnates While Elves Enjoy Slight Increase

Pay freeze for Father Christmas but elves fare better

As the holiday season approaches, jolly figures dressed as Santa Claus are discovering that their wages have remained unchanged. This news prompts many of these festive characters, taking on roles across garden centers, historic estates, and farms, to review their pay agreements with heightened scrutiny.

The hourly compensation for Santas, positioned in the middle of the pay scale, stands at £15, mirroring the rate from the previous Christmas. Meanwhile, elves, who guide children through enchanting grottos, tend to receive lower wages; however, they have experienced a modest increase in their average earnings compared to last year.

Data compiled by Incomes Data Research (IDR) indicates that an elf earning at the median level will now receive £12.48 per hour, up from £11.60 during Christmas 2024. Remuneration for Santas varies significantly depending on the venue, with some earning as little as the minimum wage of £12.21, while select locations offer rates as high as £27.59 per hour.

Dobbies, for instance, is offering £17 per hour for novice Santas, and £20 for those with prior experience. With hundreds of tourist attractions and retail venues across the UK hosting festive events in December, visitors can expect not only a meet-and-greet with Santa but also additional activities such as Christmas markets, light displays, and winter wonderland trails.

Generally speaking, the role of Father Christmas demands considerable patience, creativity, and a willingness to engage in repetitive tasks. Reports from the grottos reveal that this season, popular gift requests include Hot Wheels, slime, Transformers, and unicorns. A strong constitution is also essential, especially during a flu season marked by coughs and runny noses.

Fortunately, Santa enjoys the benefit of staying indoors and seated for most of the time. In contrast, elves, who are responsible for maintaining the festive atmosphere while families wait, often find themselves on their feet for extended durations, dressed in costumes or even outdoors as whimsical forest creatures.

Job listings for elf positions frequently highlight the need for applicants to have a passion for Christmas. However, one particularly unique advertisement for the Head Elf role at Santa’s Secret Forest in Liverpool included a requirement for candidates to possess a deep understanding of Christmas lore, including North Pole geography, elf hierarchy, and reindeer etiquette.
