BYD Poised to Surpass Tesla as Leading Global EV Distributor

China's BYD set to overtake Tesla as world's top EV seller

Chinese automaker BYD is on the verge of surpassing Elon Musk’s Tesla, positioning itself as the foremost seller of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide. This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first occasion that BYD has outperformed its American counterpart in annual sales figures.

On Thursday, BYD announced a remarkable increase in its battery-operated vehicle sales, which surged by nearly 28% last year, totaling over 2.25 million units. In contrast, Tesla is expected to disclose its complete sales numbers for 2025 later today, but recent estimates indicate that the company has sold approximately 1.65 million vehicles throughout the year.

The American manufacturer has encountered a challenging landscape this year, grappling with a mixed response to its latest offerings, discomfort surrounding Musk’s political engagements, and escalating rivalry from competitors in China. In October, Tesla launched more affordable variants of its most popular models in the United States to stimulate demand, responding to critiques regarding its slow introduction of budget-friendly options to remain competitive.

Musk, already recognized as the wealthiest individual globally, faces the challenge of substantially increasing Tesla’s sales and market capitalization over the next decade to secure an unprecedented compensation package. This agreement, which shareholders approved in November, could potentially yield payouts of up to $1 trillion (£740 billion) for him.

As part of this arrangement, Musk is also obligated to sell one million humanoid robots over the next ten years. Tesla has heavily invested in its ‘Optimus’ product line and its self-driving ‘Robotaxis’ initiative.

In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla experienced a notable decline in sales due to backlash against Musk’s involvement in former President Donald Trump’s administration. Beyond Tesla, Musk’s extensive business portfolio includes the social media platform X, the aerospace company SpaceX, and the tunnel-digging venture, the Boring Company.

These various commitments, along with overseeing Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), have led some investors to express concerns over Musk’s dedication to Tesla’s success. In response to these criticisms, Musk has committed to significantly reducing his role in government affairs.

Despite BYD’s swift growth in recent years, its sales expansion has decelerated in 2025, marking the slowest growth rate in five years. The Shenzhen-based company is facing increasing competition in its primary market, China, from a host of emerging EV manufacturers like XPeng and Nio.

Nevertheless, BYD continues to assert itself as a dominant force in the global EV market, often undercutting competitors with its pricing strategy. The company’s rapid growth, particularly in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and select European markets, persists despite numerous countries imposing significant tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

In October, BYD declared that the United Kingdom had become its largest market outside of China. The company reported an astounding 880% increase in sales in Britain for the year ending in September, propelled by a strong demand for the plug-in hybrid variant of its Seal U SUV.
