Anthony Joshua Resumes Training After Tragic Accident

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has made his return to the gym, just weeks after a devastating car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.

The former champion, aged 36, suffered only minor injuries from the incident that took place in Nigeria on December 29.

Both Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele tragically lost their lives when their vehicle, which Joshua was traveling in, crashed into a parked truck on a busy road close to Lagos.

Nineteen days post-accident, Joshua shared a video on Snapchat where he can be seen training and hitting pads, captioning the footage with the phrase “mental strength therapy” at the bottom of one of the clips.

Prior to the crash, he achieved victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, just ten days before the tragic event while on vacation in Nigeria.

In a heartfelt tribute last week, Joshua took to Instagram to honor his strength and conditioning coach Ghami as well as trainer Ayodele.

“I didn’t even realize how special they are,” he reflected. “I would just be walking with them and joking around, completely unaware that God had placed me in the company of such remarkable individuals.”

He added, “It’s undoubtedly tough for me, but I recognize that it’s even harder for their families.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn stated his belief that Joshua will return to the boxing ring when he feels ready.

On Wednesday, Hearn communicated with Sky Sports, emphasizing, “He will require time to heal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually before making a decision regarding his future.”

He continued, “I believe Joshua will want to box again, but the timing of that choice will be entirely up to him. It’s definitely not a discussion we will be having anytime soon.”

“The most important conversation at this moment is to check in on him, ensuring he is okay. Often, people may portray an image of being fine, but what he has experienced is anything but normal and is heartbreaking for all involved,” Hearn concluded.

“When the moment is right, I trust he will communicate his decision, and that will be the only perspective worth listening to in this context. We will allow him the necessary time to make his choice and heal.”
