Arrest Made in Connection with Brown University Shooting

'Person of interest' detained over Brown University shooting, police say

A person of interest has been taken into custody regarding the shooting incident at Brown University, which tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals, according to law enforcement officials.

The shooting occurred on Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island, injuring nine others when a gunman opened fire within the university premises.

Authorities have confirmed that the apprehended individual is in his twenties, although his identity has not yet been disclosed.

Condition of Victims and Details of the Incident

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley provided an update, stating that seven of the injured remain stable, one is in critical condition, and another has been released from medical care.

The attack unfolded in a classroom at approximately 4:00 PM local time (9:00 PM GMT) in the Holley engineering building, located at the eastern section of the Brown campus.

As of now, the names of the deceased and the injured have not been publicly shared, but Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that all affected were students.

University Response and Community Support

In a statement issued by the university on Sunday, Paxson noted that certain campus areas remain off-limits as investigations are ongoing.

Approximately 2,000 students were relocated for their safety overnight, with Paxson expressing her emotional gratitude to community members who offered shelter to those in need.

She also mentioned that support is being provided to the families of the two deceased students, acknowledging the profound sorrow of losing a child.

“There are not enough words of comfort for families who lose a child, but we will do all we can,” she stated.

Vigil and Ongoing Investigation

During a press conference on Sunday, Mayor Smiley announced that a previously issued shelter-in-place order for residents has been lifted.

He shared his experiences meeting with victims and their families at the hospital, expressing that he was deeply moved by their resilience and gratitude.

A vigil for the community is scheduled for Sunday evening to honor those affected.

Earlier, police released surveillance images of a male suspect dressed in black who was seen leaving the scene. However, no weapon was located during a thorough search of the building.

FBI Director Kash Patel reported that the suspect was apprehended at a hotel in Coventry early Sunday morning, following leads from local police.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez confirmed that investigators are not seeking additional suspects and are collaborating with prosecutors to gather evidence.

In response to the crisis, a significant presence of police and federal agents was deployed to Providence on Saturday to locate the shooter.

Speaking from the White House, President Trump extended wishes for a swift recovery to the nine injured students and expressed condolences to the families mourning the two fatalities.

This incident marks the 389th mass shooting reported in the United States this year, as classified by the Gun Violence Archive, which defines mass shootings as events involving four or more victims, excluding the assailant.
