Children Forgive Father’s Actions Amid Mental Health Crisis

'We don't blame dad for killing mum, he was ill'

The offspring of a man who took his wife’s life during a severe mental breakdown, followed by his own suicide, have expressed to the media that they do not hold their father accountable for the tragic events.

Chris and Ruth Stone-Houghton tragically lost their lives in September 2022 at their residence in Portsmouth.

An official investigation revealed there had been a significant shortfall in the support provided to the family after Chris was released from a psychiatric facility just weeks before the incident.

Oliver, their son, articulated, “We do not seek to absolve him. I have never doubted that this was purely a consequence of his illness.”

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged that it had gained insights from this incident to enhance care for individuals facing mental health crises and their families.

Describing their parents as nurturing and affectionate, Oliver and his sister Abbie emphasized their strong bond with both Chris and Ruth. “Our childhood was filled with joy, and as adults, we remained very connected to them,” Abbie recounted.

Chris operated a jewelry business that Ruth also contributed to. Prior to the pandemic, he had no record of mental health issues, but as the business faltered and ultimately shut down in April 2022, he began to suffer from delusional thoughts.

His paranoia escalated as he mistakenly believed he was being monitored through his electronic devices, leading to a profound fear of being pursued by unseen threats. He became increasingly isolated and visibly weakened, grappling with thoughts of self-harm.

Oliver, now 30, recalled, “He felt as if he had lost his purpose.”

In July 2022, Chris received a diagnosis of psychotic depression and made a suicide attempt.

He was subsequently committed and admitted to a mental health ward at St James’ Hospital in Portsmouth, managed by the local NHS trust, where the family expected he would remain for an extended period.
