As the release of Wednesday’s statement approached, the chancellor frequently mentioned a downgrade in the UK’s expected economic productivity, claiming this would challenge her ability to adhere to her spending commitments.
However, in a letter sent to Members of Parliament on Friday, the chairman of the Office for Budget Responsibility revealed that a forecast of increased wages—something Reeves had not referenced—would actually assist her in meeting the guidelines.
