Eurostar Travelers Face Continued Delays as Overnight Chaos Persists

Eurostar delays enter second day as passengers stuck onboard for hours overnight

Passengers using Eurostar are preparing for further disruptions following a significant power failure in the Channel Tunnel, which resulted in major travel issues for countless individuals on Tuesday.

As many rushed to reach their destinations ahead of New Year’s Eve, some reported being trapped on trains for over six hours through the night due to ongoing delays.

A 27-year-old from Paris recounted boarding the 19:01 service but found himself still waiting at the tunnel entrance by 03:00 GMT. He mentioned staff had indicated a ‘50% chance of heading to Paris, and a 50% chance of returning to London.’

Operational Updates and Continued Challenges

Eurostar announced intentions to resume all services on Wednesday, though they cautioned that delays and cancellations could still occur. The 06:00 GMT train from London to Paris was officially canceled.

The outage stemmed from issues with the overhead power supply alongside a malfunctioning LeShuttle train, which obstructed all routes and affected numerous travelers eager to celebrate the New Year.

While some Eurostar and LeShuttle services began operating again on Tuesday evening, the situation remained problematic, with only one of the tunnel’s dual rail lines available for use.

Passengers Share Their Experiences

Getlink, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, confirmed that repairs were ongoing throughout the night to address the power supply problem. By Wednesday morning, Eurostar’s website reported that services had recommenced following the previous day’s power outage and subsequent rail infrastructure complications.

“We intend to operate all services today, but due to the ripple effects from earlier issues, delays and potential last-minute cancellations may still be expected,” the website noted.

One traveler, Dennis van der Steen from the Netherlands, was attempting to reach Amsterdam for New Year’s Eve with loved ones but found himself on a stationary Eurostar train for six hours before it finally resumed its journey around 03:00 GMT.

“We’re stuck,” he expressed, noting the lack of power on the train and the mixed reactions among passengers, some asleep while others appeared anxious.

Another individual described their experience as a “rollercoaster of emotions,” uncertain whether the train would proceed across the Channel or revert back to London. Eventually, he successfully reached Brussels and expressed relief at being home, observing that many families were left stranded.

Widespread Disruption and Passenger Frustration

Social media platforms were inundated with images showcasing large crowds of passengers at London St Pancras International following the power failure on Tuesday. A photograph from a Eurostar train operator depicted overhead electrical cables scattered across the tracks.

In addition to train disruptions, vehicles attempting to utilize the Channel Tunnel faced severe traffic congestion near the LeShuttle terminal in Folkestone.

Tim Brown, who was returning to the UK after Christmas in Germany, reported being confined in his car on the LeShuttle train for over three hours without access to food or water.

By midday on Tuesday, at least a dozen Eurostar services connecting the UK with France, Belgium, and the Netherlands had been canceled. The rail operator issued an apology, offering passengers the option to rebook their journeys at no additional cost or to cancel for a refund or e-voucher.

Eurostar also encouraged customers to consider rescheduling their travels for another day whenever possible and advised against heading to stations if their trains had already been canceled.
