Farage Escapes Police Inquiry Over Campaign Spending Allegations

Farage will not face police inquiry into spending

Nigel Farage will not be subjected to a police investigation regarding accusations that Reform UK exceeded its financial limits during the 2024 general election campaign.

According to Essex Police, the agency is unable to pursue an inquiry since more than a year has elapsed since the purported violation occurred.

This decision comes after a former member of Farage’s campaign team alleged that Reform UK surpassed the legally mandated spending cap of £20,660.

A spokesperson for the police stated, “Any legal action for such an infraction must begin within a one-year timeframe.”

She further explained that a report concerning alleged misreported campaign expenses was received on December 5, 2024.

“It has been concluded that this report falls outside of the stated statutory time limit, and no investigation can take place,” the spokesperson added.

The allegations were brought to light by Richard Everett, a former campaign worker for Reform UK.

Everett claimed that the party neglected to declare expenses associated with various materials, including leaflets, banners, utility bills, and renovations of a bar within the Clacton constituency office.

Initial documents regarding the case were forwarded to the Metropolitan Police, which subsequently transferred it to Essex Police.

Essex Police noted that the one-year limitation for investigating such allegations is established under the Representation of the People Act of 1983.

Nonetheless, Farage may still be subject to scrutiny by the Electoral Commission.

He assumed leadership of Reform UK in June 2024, just a month prior to the general election.

Farage successfully reclaimed the Clacton seat in Essex from the Conservatives, winning with a substantial majority of over 8,000 votes.

Reform UK has been approached for a statement regarding the situation.
