Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell Faces Criminal Investigation by U.S. Justice Department

US justice department opens criminal probe into Fed chair Jerome Powell

In a surprising turn of events, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell revealed on Sunday that the U.S. Justice Department has initiated a criminal investigation involving him.

During a video statement, Powell disclosed that subpoenas had been issued to the Federal Reserve, with threats of a criminal indictment stemming from his testimony regarding renovations to the Fed’s facilities before a Senate committee.

He described the investigation as “unprecedented,” suggesting it was prompted by his refusal to acquiesce to President Donald Trump’s pressure to reduce interest rates.

The Investigation’s Context

Powell’s current predicament marks another instance of tension between Trump and officials who have resisted his economic policies, leading to inquiries by the Justice Department.

The Justice Department and the White House have been approached for comments regarding the matter.

Powell emphasized the significance of this investigation for the Federal Reserve’s independence in setting monetary policy, stating, “This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions, or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.”

Powell’s Stance on the Rule of Law

Expressing his commitment to the rule of law, Powell stated, “I have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy. No one, certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve, is above the law, but this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration’s threats and ongoing pressure.”

In a separate NBC News interview, Trump claimed he was unaware of the investigation but criticized Powell’s performance, stating, “I don’t know anything about it, but he’s certainly not very good at the Fed, and he’s not very good at building buildings.”

Implications of the Probe

The investigation, while not officially confirmed by prosecutors, suggests an escalation in Trump’s ongoing conflict with Powell, whom he appointed as Fed chair in 2017.

Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with Powell’s reluctance to quickly lower interest rates, which he feels is necessary for economic growth.

As inflation remains a pressing issue in the U.S., Trump has consistently shifted blame onto his predecessor, Joe Biden, and rising interest rates.

Political Reactions

Concerns have been raised regarding the implications of Trump’s pressure on the Federal Reserve’s ability to operate independently.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, has stated he will oppose any nomination from Trump to replace Powell until the situation is resolved.

If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none.

Tillis further noted that the integrity of the Justice Department is also under scrutiny due to these developments.

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed her belief that Trump aims to remove Powell permanently and replace him with someone who would align with his agenda.

This committee and the Senate should not move forward with any Trump nominee for the Fed, including Fed Chair.

According to reports, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will oversee Powell’s investigation.

Previously, Trump attempted to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, but that case was halted by a federal court and is set to be reviewed by the Supreme Court later this month.

Past criminal charges initiated by Trump’s Justice Department against political opponents, such as New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey, have also faced dismissal by the courts.

Both Comey and James have consistently maintained their innocence, asserting that the actions against them were politically motivated.
