Former PM Aide Critiques Politicians for Losing Control to External Forces

Politicians have given away too much power to deliver pledges, says PM's ex-aide

According to a former advisor to the Prime Minister, politicians have relinquished excessive authority to legal professionals, activists, and regulatory bodies, resulting in their inability to fulfill campaign promises. Paul Ovenden, who previously served as Keir Starmer’s political strategy director before resigning due to the emergence of inappropriate messages he sent in 2017, expressed these views in a recent op-ed.

He articulated that the British government has expanded significantly, while concurrently undermining its own capabilities. In his assessment, the situation involving British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abd El Fattah highlighted the peculiar ways in which government officials prioritize their time.

During an interview, Ovenden emphasized that politicians could regain dominance over democratic processes with a renewed determination. He praised Sir Keir Starmer as the ideal leader for enacting necessary reforms, noting that Starmer is deeply aware of the frustrations faced by many.
