This Saturday, Pep Guardiola will step onto the pitch at Old Trafford for the 198th Manchester derby, facing a sixth distinct manager from Manchester United during his nearly ten-year tenure at Manchester City.

Michael Carrick, who has taken over as the interim head coach following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, will be leading the United squad in this crucial match.

While turmoil persists for United, a sense of tranquility envelops the blue side of Manchester.

Guardiola and his players aim to secure a league double that keeps their Premier League title aspirations alive, whereas Carrick seeks to claim local bragging rights amid a challenging season.

The previous season was an unusual setback for City, as they did not secure any major trophies. However, they appear to have returned to their formidable form, with Guardiola praising the revitalized spirit within his squad, which is currently on a 13-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Guardiola remarked, “Results, results. If you don’t win, you are sacked. We won a lot, that’s why I am sitting here. There is no other secret.”

He further explained that City’s patience during tough periods is a defining characteristic of the club, stating, “Another club last season, I would not be here anymore. They were patient, possibly due to what we achieved in the past. Our previous performance was quite poor, but the past was exceptional, and the number of titles we’ve amassed is extraordinary, which is why I remain here.”

Transitioning Managers

Over the last decade, United has cycled through a variety of managerial figures, including the charismatic Jose Mourinho, the enthusiastic Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the brief interim leadership of Ralf Rangnick, the tactical Erik ten Hag, and the promising Ruben Amorim.

All of these managers have come and gone, unable to outlast Guardiola, who has been at the helm of City since July 2016.

Additionally, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Darren Fletcher have each taken on caretaker roles, while Carrick now finds himself in charge for the second time as United seeks to reignite nostalgia in hopes of salvaging a season devoid of silverware.

Having been eliminated early from both domestic cups, United currently trails Premier League leaders Arsenal by 17 points, and a top-five finish to return to the Champions League would be viewed as a success.

As United grapples with its identity crisis, City continues to operate smoothly and effectively.

Guardiola’s Tactical Excellence

The current iteration of Guardiola’s squad looks poised to challenge Arsenal fiercely in the league, with the possibility of a meeting in the Carabao Cup final looming.

Guardiola revitalized both his team and coaching staff during the summer, yet the fundamental playing style and philosophy have remained consistent since the ‘tiki-taka’ era at Barcelona.

This season, City boasts an impressive 58.6% possession rate, ranking second in the league, just behind Liverpool. They lead the league in both ball touches and attempted dribbles against opponents, according to data from a statistical analysis site.

United may feel apprehensive facing a Guardiola-led team that has scored the most goals in the league this season, netting 45 times, and recently overwhelming Exeter City with a staggering 10 goals in an FA Cup match.

The squad Carrick has taken over has achieved only two clean sheets in 21 league matches this season, and any improvement in defense would be a notable accomplishment for the new manager.

Financial Backing and Achievements

Guardiola’s legacy as the most successful manager in Manchester City’s history is undisputed, and he is also regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time, having secured numerous domestic and international titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

He has maintained a strong working relationship with the City’s management, notably with former sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who departed in the summer, and his successor, Hugo Viana.

Guardiola has received significant financial support in the transfer market, with the recent acquisition of forward Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £62.5 million pushing his total spending at City beyond the £2 billion mark.

Furthermore, the club is nearing an agreement to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi this month for £20 million, further enhancing their squad.

Since his arrival in July 2016, Guardiola’s net expenditure of approximately £957 million ranks third in England, just behind United’s £1.17 billion and Arsenal’s £963 million, with United’s spending yielding little success.

However, Guardiola’s financial outlay has coincided with significant achievements, including 18 trophies, such as six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four Carabao Cups, and the coveted Champions League title in 2023.

According to Transfermarkt, the 54-year-old, who celebrates his 55th birthday on Sunday, is recognized as the highest-spending manager in football history, having invested £2.24 billion in players throughout his career, followed by his rival Mourinho with £1.72 billion and Carlo Ancelotti with £1.56 billion.

Guardiola and City are still awaiting a resolution regarding the 115 financial charges brought against the club by the Premier League, nearly three years after their initial announcement.

Derby Dynamics

Throughout Guardiola’s tenure, United has yet to surpass City in the league standings, with two second-place finishes being their closest attempts.

City triumphed over United in the 2023 FA Cup final, contributing to their Treble success, although Ten Hag’s side later exacted revenge by defeating Guardiola’s men at Wembley a year later.

In total, Guardiola has faced United 26 times in various competitions, securing 14 wins, including a penalty shootout victory in the 2024 Community Shield.

No United manager has maintained a winning record against Guardiola, with Solskjaer (four wins and four losses) and Amorim (one win and one loss) being the only exceptions.

Guardiola commented on the rivalry, stating, “It is what it is. I cannot control what United have done. You know from day one, the opinion I have for United. I don’t know what happened because I am not there.”

Nevertheless, Guardiola’s league performance against United might offer a glimmer of hope for Red Devils supporters.

Among teams he has faced at least five times, Guardiola boasts a points-per-game average of 1.74 against United, only faring worse against Tottenham (1.42) and Liverpool (1.32).

A loss on Saturday could certainly hinder City’s title ambitions, but it would not initiate panic within the Etihad Stadium.

Conversely, United will be eager for their latest reset to yield a victorious beginning and break the cycle of instability at Old Trafford.
