Israeli Airstrike Eliminates Senior Hamas Leader in Gaza

Israel targets senior Hamas official in deadly Gaza strike

On Saturday, Israeli forces announced the elimination of a high-ranking Hamas commander in a targeted airstrike on a vehicle located in Gaza.

According to a combined statement from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency, they successfully struck down Raed Saad, who was the head of weaponry production for the military arm of Hamas, known as the Qassam Brigades, in Gaza City.

Saad had earned a reputation as one of the leading figures within the Qassam Brigades, having commanded various units during the attacks on Israeli neighborhoods that occurred on October 7.

Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Civil Defence under Hamas, reported that the airstrike resulted in four fatalities, with several bystanders also suffering injuries from the explosion.

A local Hamas representative confirmed that Saad’s aide was among the deceased, along with another lower-ranking official known as Abu Imad al-Laban.

Due to restrictions imposed by Israel, independent verification of the incident by outside media sources remains unattainable.

The joint announcement by the IDF and Shin Bet stated that Saad was culpable for the deaths of numerous soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip through the use of explosive devices.

He is believed to be part of a newly established five-member military leadership council that has been operational since the ceasefire took effect in October.

Israel has made several attempts on his life in the past, with one notable operation taking place in March 2024, where Israeli forces aimed to capture or eliminate him during a raid in Gaza City. Sources indicated that he was present in the targeted area but managed to evade capture just before the operation commenced.

For over twenty years, he has been considered one of the most wanted individuals by Israeli authorities within the Hamas organization.

The recent strike occurred on the Palestinian-administered side of the Yellow Line, which has separated Gaza since an unstable ceasefire led by the United States was enacted on October 10.

Israeli military forces maintain control over the territory to the east of this line, which encompasses slightly more than half of the Gaza Strip.

The initial phase of President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace proposal necessitated the return of all living and deceased hostages taken during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

This attack claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 individuals, with over 250 taken hostage.

To date, all hostages have been returned with the exception of the remains of an Israeli police officer, Ran Gvili, 24, presumed killed while combating Hamas militants in Kibbutz Alumim.

According to reports from Gaza’s health ministry governed by Hamas, Israeli military actions have led to the deaths of more than 70,000 Palestinians since the conflict escalated.

As diplomatic efforts progress, attention is now turning to the subsequent phase of President Trump’s initiative, which includes disarming Hamas as part of a broader strategy for de-radicalization and redevelopment of Gaza.

This plan envisions governance of Gaza under a temporary, non-political Palestinian committee, supervised by a
