King’s Speech Scheduled for the Week Following Key Elections

King's Speech set for week after crunch elections

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is poised to present his government’s agenda shortly after the pivotal elections in May.

The King’s Speech is tentatively arranged for May 12 or 13 next year, following the nationwide elections set for May 7.

This upcoming electoral event encompasses the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Senedd, alongside numerous council positions in England and several directly elected mayoralties.

Labour anticipates a challenging night at the polls, with many party MPs suggesting that the results could trigger questions regarding Sir Keir’s leadership.

A government insider remarked, “It will be considerably more difficult for anyone to contest the Prime Minister’s position and advocate for a different path when the King is scheduled to address Parliament, outlining our plans for the upcoming year.”

However, some argue that the timing of the King’s Speech does not correlate with any potential threat to Sir Keir’s leadership, noting that in recent years, including 2022, the speech has occurred in May, coinciding with local elections.

The King’s Speech has also been delivered shortly after local elections in 2021 and 2016.

This address is an integral part of the state opening of Parliament, a ceremonial occasion that signifies the commencement of a parliamentary session, which usually lasts for a year, though it can extend beyond that.

The current session is notably lengthy, having commenced after the general election in July 2024.

The government drafts the speech, which is then delivered by the Monarch from a throne located in the House of Lords.

It outlines the government’s plans for the forthcoming session, detailing the legislation they aim to advance.

Cabinet ministers initiated the formal process of requesting inclusion of their proposed legislation in the King’s Speech around early October.

According to a source, most ministers are now informed about the bills Sir Keir wishes to feature in his agenda after May.
