Professor Sir Paul Nurse, a prominent figure in British science, has expressed grave concerns regarding the government’s visa policies for researchers, claiming they are detrimental to the country’s economic prospects.

In an interview, Sir Paul highlighted that exorbitant visa fees are discouraging emerging researchers from pursuing opportunities in the UK, while competitors like China and Singapore are actively recruiting these talents.

Proponents of the existing visa framework argue that increased fees contribute to NHS funding and align with public sentiment on immigration issues. However, Sir Paul contends that such measures jeopardize the future of the UK’s scientific community.

“Having costly visa requirements is detrimental to our interests. It does nothing to attract the very individuals we need,” stated Sir Paul.

As the new President of the Royal Society, which represents the UK’s foremost scientists, he cautions that nations like Singapore and China are making significant efforts to attract international scientific talent.

“Why do we impose barriers on those who can significantly boost our economy? It is illogical,” he added.
