Surge in Ambulance Requests Amid Escalating Flu Season

Ambulance demand spikes as flu season worsens

As the flu season intensifies, the volume of emergency calls in London has surged significantly over the past week. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) has reported that it experienced its busiest three consecutive days of 2025.

The service noted that there has been a notable 20% rise in calls, particularly from individuals suffering from respiratory issues linked to viral infections and flu-related complications.

According to NHS data, less than half of the eligible population in London has received this season’s complimentary flu vaccine. Health experts have warned that this could be the most severe flu season in a decade, driven by a novel strain of the virus.

Emergency Services Under Pressure

Laurence Cowderoy, the strategic commander for LAS, indicated that extensive preparations were made for the winter months. However, he still urged residents to reserve 999 calls for critical emergencies only.

He compared the current high volume of calls to typical patterns seen during New Year’s Eve celebrations, highlighting the unusual demand.

To effectively manage the challenges posed by the winter season, the LAS has implemented several operational strategies, ensuring they are equipped to handle increased demand.

Impact of the New Flu Strain

Karen Bonner, the regional chief nurse for London, explained that NHS personnel are already witnessing the effects of the new flu variant, as more patients arrive at accident and emergency departments displaying various symptoms.

“This year’s flu is particularly severe; our observations from Australia and other regions confirm its intensity. Therefore, our priority is to safeguard the public,” she emphasized.

Call Statistics

The number of emergency calls received by the London Ambulance Service during the past few days is as follows:

  • Thursday, November 27: 7,356 calls
  • Friday, November 28: 7,608 calls
  • Saturday, November 29: 7,409 calls
  • Sunday, November 30: 6,776 calls

Typically, on a busy day, the LAS manages around 5,500 calls. Furthermore, NHS England has reported that approximately 1.7 million individuals have availed themselves of the free flu vaccination this season in London, accounting for about 46% of those eligible.

Eligibility for the Flu Vaccine

It is crucial for eligible individuals to understand who qualifies for the flu vaccine, as this can play a significant role in public health during this challenging season.
