Thailand and Cambodia Reach Ceasefire Agreement Following Deadly Border Conflicts

Thailand and Cambodia agree ceasefire after weeks of deadly clashes

In a significant development, Thailand and Cambodia have announced a ceasefire, as confirmed by the defense ministers of both nations in a joint statement released on Saturday.

The two countries have agreed to halt all troop movements and facilitate the safe return of civilians residing in border areas, bringing an end to weeks of fierce clashes that resulted in at least 41 fatalities and nearly one million people being displaced.

The ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT), and should it remain intact for 72 hours, the statement indicated that 18 Cambodian soldiers currently detained by Thailand will be released.

This breakthrough followed several days of discussions between Thai and Cambodian officials aimed at resolving the recent hostilities.

Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

The joint statement delineates the terms for de-escalation, which include an immediate cessation of attacks on civilians, civilian infrastructure, and military targets from either side.

Additionally, both parties must refrain from any unprovoked gunfire or troop movements towards the opposing side’s positions, as emphasized in the statement.

The release of the 18 Cambodian soldiers is to be conducted “in the spirit of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration,” which is an agreement signed by both countries during a ceremony attended by US President Donald Trump in October of the previous year.

Background of Recent Clashes

Earlier this month, the ceasefire agreement was violated, triggering renewed fighting between the two nations, with both sides exchanging accusations over the truce’s failure.

The Thai military reported that its forces were responding to fire from Cambodia in Si Sa Ket province, which resulted in injuries to two Thai soldiers.

Conversely, Cambodia’s defense ministry claimed that Thai troops initiated the attack in Preah Vihear province, insisting that Cambodia did not retaliate.

Throughout December, skirmishes persisted, and on Friday, Thailand conducted airstrikes in a disputed border area of Cambodia.
