Women and Oasis Propel Music Sales in the UK for 2025

Female artists (and Oasis) drove UK music sales in 2025

In a year that unfolded as expected, Taylor Swift once again took the reins of the UK music scene in 2025. Her twelfth studio album,The Life of a Showgirl, emerged as the top-selling record, achieving a remarkable 642,000 sales since its October launch.

The female artists were at the forefront throughout the year, with rising stars like Olivia Dean and Lola Young energizing the music industry, leading to unprecedented sales figures. Altogether, combined sales surged nearly 5%, totaling 201 million albums sold or streamed.

Oasis experienced a significant revival as well, propelled by their blockbuster reunion tour, which enabled them to sell over one million albums in 2025. Their greatest hits collection,Time Flies, ranked as the fourth best-selling album, while(What’s The Story) Morning Glorysecured the seventh position.

These statistics were released by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which noted that streaming now represents 89% of the music market. According to the Official Charts Company, 1,000 streams of a song from an album equate to one album sale.

In total, listeners streamed 210.3 billion songs throughout the year, with Alex Warren’s trackOrdinarybeing the most played song of 2025. However, Warren’s hit was one of the few new entries to make a significant impact, as older tracks dominated the charts.

Six out of the ten best-selling singles originated in 2024, and Chappell Roan’sPink Pony Clubwas even older, having initially debuted in 2020. The year proved to be a breakout moment for new female talent, as Lola Young’s singleMessybecame the second-biggest single of the year.

Olivia Dean made history by becoming the first female artist in the UK charts to debut at number one with both her single(Man I Need)and her albumThe Art Of Lovingin the same week. When asked about the resonance of her music, Dean described her aim to craft an album that serves as a comforting escape during challenging times.
