Flights at Edinburgh Airport Resume Amid Disruptions Following IT Glitch

Disruption as flights resume at Edinburgh Airport after outage

Travelers at Edinburgh Airport are currently facing a wave of delays and cancellations due to a significant air traffic control malfunction that halted all flights. The disruption lasted for approximately two hours, with air traffic services resuming at 10:40 AM. Many passengers reported being stranded on aircraft while grounded on the tarmac.

In the aftermath of the outage, numerous flights have experienced cascading delays, diversions, and outright cancellations, affecting many travelers attempting to fly in and out of the airport.

According to Edinburgh Airport, the issue stemmed from an IT failure linked to its air traffic control provider, Air Navigations Solutions (ANSL). The airport expressed gratitude to its passengers for their understanding and patience during this challenging time.

An official from ANSL confirmed that a thorough investigation is currently underway to pinpoint the exact cause of the technical problems. So far, seven flights have been canceled, including routes to Paris, Bristol, Belfast, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Luton, and Belfast City.

Additionally, 11 aircraft were redirected from landing, and 15 flights encountered delays. The airport indicated that the situation remains dynamic, and further disruptions may still occur.

Passengers are encouraged to reach out to their respective airlines for the most current updates regarding their travel plans.

Margot and Iver Morton, travelers from Dundee, reported a daunting 10-hour wait at the airport following the cancellation of their flight. The couple, en route to London to deliver Christmas gifts to their teenage grandchildren, managed to secure a spot on a later flight to Gatwick.

Iver remarked, “It was most unexpected. We’ve been left to fend for ourselves and it’s not been an easy process. It took us half an hour to get re-booked on to another flight. It’s not been the best of days. Our original flight was at 10:25, and our new flight takes off at 21:00. We’re trying to amuse ourselves for the next 10 hours.”

Christine McKenzie, who had traveled to Edinburgh for a holiday gathering, opted to book a train to Bristol after learning of her flight’s delay. “I think you just have to go with the flow. It’s unavoidable, so people were just waiting and being patient. We are going to go back into the center of Edinburgh and get the train. There are three of us, so at least we are together,” she shared.

Despite the frustrations, she acknowledged that it could have been much worse.

Jeff Ballard, a jazz musician from Florence, was scheduled for a 12:00 flight to Belfast, which was canceled. He and his two bandmates were in search of alternative travel arrangements as they have a performance scheduled in the city later today.

“We showed up, checked in, and went to the gate only to receive a text informing us that the flight was canceled. We played last night in Edinburgh, and it was fantastic. Now we’re eager to head to Belfast, but the flight cancellation is a setback. They did offer us another flight, but it’s scheduled for tomorrow morning, which is not helpful,” he lamented.

Felicity from Swindon expressed her disappointment, stating that the delays would cause her to miss her youngest child’s final nativity play. She had come to Edinburgh for a work meeting and had already waited for an hour and a half, with many passengers on her flight missing their connecting flights.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, advised that airlines are responsible for ensuring diverted passengers reach their original destinations and should cover associated costs. “Contact the airline first, but you can claim for onward travel if that proves impossible,” he stated. However, he noted that compensation for delays or cancellations resulting from technical issues like this is unlikely.

Edinburgh Airport ranks among the busiest in the UK, having served 15.8 million passengers in the previous year. An ANSL representative stated, “Earlier today, a technical issue affected one of our systems at Edinburgh Airport, temporarily disrupting flight operations. Safety is our top priority, and our engineers worked diligently to restore system functionality as quickly as possible. Within 90 minutes, we had reinstated our technical capabilities and flights resumed. We regret any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate everyone’s patience during this period.”
