Mistaken Speeding Fines May Be Revoked for Thousands of Drivers

Thousands of drivers wrongly fined for speeding since 2021

Numerous motorists may see their speeding penalties annulled due to a malfunction that caused certain speed cameras to trigger inaccurately on England’s A roads and motorways.

National Highways disclosed that it identified 2,650 instances of erroneous speed camera activations dating back to 2021, resulting from a lag between the cameras and the variable speed limit signs.

Drivers impacted by this issue will be notified by law enforcement and will receive refunds for any fines paid, along with the removal of points from their driving records where applicable.

Details of the Error

Not every activation from these cameras led to penalties, indicating that not all of the erroneous triggers resulted in fines.

National Highways expressed regret over the situation, with CEO Nick Harris stating that a solution has been pinpointed.

“Safety is our top priority… All motorists should continue to adhere to the posted speed limits as usual. Affected individuals will be reached out to by the appropriate police department,” he remarked.
